Family of 8 butchered in Jos violence

The circle of violence in Plateau State continued yesterday as another family of eight was wiped out by assailants at a village in Heipang District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. Among those killed was a four-month-old baby.

The attackers who were said to have been heavily armed struck at the residence of Mr. Chollom Nangup Gyang at Tatu village around midnight while they were deep asleep, killing him, his wife and six children.

A similar attack on another family in Heipang sometime back also left a man and six members of his family dead.

The attack in Heipang came just as a bomb was discovered at the centre of a market in Riyom and was detonated by the police anti-bomb unit before it exploded.

An account said the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was planted at the market by unknown persons and was discovered by an elderly man who found a container with a clock in it and got curious.

The police were later called in following which it was discovered to be a bomb and was successfully detonated before it could cause any damage.

Chairman of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Mr. Emmanuel Loman who visited the residence of the attacked family yesterday pointed accusing fingers at Fulanis from a neighbuoring village.

“We are suspecting the Fulanis in this attack because this is their route and apart from that, the Fulanis that live in nearby Mahanger village are heavily armed and I have been crying out to government to go to the village in search for arms but the government is not acting on my request. You can see that the guns used to attack the residents in this place are sophisticated weapons. Government should do something fast before the next attack on another family; government should go in there and recover all arms stocked there”, he said.

He described the wiping out of another family shortly after a similar attack some weeks back as worrisome, adding, “this kind of attack aimed at an entire family is the second in less than a month in my local government. What is going on is beyond words; it is barbaric and inhuman for someone or group of people to embark on a killing spree of this magnitude”.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr, Yiljap Abraham who also visited the scene of the attack expressed the regret of the state government over the incident and called on the people to be more vigilant to avoid a recurrence.

He told newsmen that government was sad that violence had continued in spite of efforts to restore peace. No matter the number of military and police personnel, they are not enough to protect everyone. So government is calling on community and religious leaders and politicians to enlighten their people to help themselves.

“Arrangements should be made to protect the people; let people take measures to safeguard lives and property in every community,” he said.

Yiljap, however, tasked the various communities and ethnic groups to adopt dialogue, saying that dialogue still remained the best solution to the lingering crisis.

Capt. Charles Ekeocha, the Spokesman of the military Special Task Force (STF) maintaining security in Plateau, in his reaction to the attacks, said that the STF had no business with the area. He explained that the STF withdrew its men after the communities in the area said they did not want them.

He said: “The security of that area is not the concern of the STF; they have said that we are responsible for the attacks. In fact, officials from the army headquarters came and investigated the claims of the communities and we are still awaiting the outcome of their findings.

“They have always accused our men of the attacks, so I do not know who could have attacked them now that our men have been withdrawn.”

Reminded that the STF was in charge of security in the entire Plateau, Ekeocha agreed, but quickly added that soldiers were not in charge of that specific area since they had been accused of masterminding the attacks over time.

“There was even a time they claimed to have picked military ID cards at the scene of such attacks. So we are out of their area. I suggest you contact the police or the Plateau-owned security outfit, Operation Rainbow,” he said.

Meanwhile, church services held peacefully but amidst heavy security in most churches in the state capital following reports of a planned attack on churches which made many adherents to shun service.

Text messages of a plan to make the day a bloody Sunday and alleged importation of mercenaries to carry out the attack were sent out to people until late Saturday with an advice to spread the warning, a situation which instilled fear in many residents.

However, a nine-member security committee has been set up by the Jamaatu Nasir Islam and the Council of Ulama to educate residents of Jos metropolis on the importance of peaceful co-existence.

Chairman of the committee, Abdulmalik Aminu told journalists that it has swung into action and has visited various security agencies to brief them of its mission.

He said the committee was also educating the youths against attacking security personnel in the course of their duty as happened recently and to see the attainment of peace as a collective responsibility.

Foreign airlines may suspend Abuja flights over insecurity

Foreign airlines coming into Nigeria through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja are currently taking a holistic review of security in Nigeria’s capital with a view to halting flights to the area if security does not improve there.

The airlines, particularly those from Europe are worried over the spate of bombing that has shattered the peace of the hitherto serene Abuja, following the terror attack on United Nations (UN) buildings, that killed over 25 persons and injured many others recently.

The Guardian learnt that immediately after the incident occurred, the airlines considered relocating their Abuja operations to Lagos or even suspending flights in the interim until security was guaranteed in the nation’s capital.

The airlines equally expressed worry over the safety of their crews in Abuja hotels and tinkered with the idea of doing a quick turnaround back to Europe.

An official of one of the airlines who spoke with The Guardian on condition of anonymity,

explained that assurances from President Goodluck Jonathan and the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) “made us to understand that the situation won’t deteriorate.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has again warned that all persons without genuine and legal mission to the nation’s 22 airports will henceforth be arrested and prosecuted.

Also, cameras are to be installed along the less than two-kilometre access road linking the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport to Ikeja, according to Managing Director, FAAN, Richard Aisuebeogun.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have raised concern over incursion of animals unto sensitive areas of Kaduna airport.

The situation further highlights the porosity of the nation’s airports, with many of them lacking perimeter fence and other safety devises to check runway incursion.

Raising the alarm over poor security arrangement at the airport, Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), the umbrella body for the airlines, said reports received from pilots and ground staff at the airports were worrying and called for urgent steps to avert danger.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Assistant Secretary General, AON, Mohammed Tukur, expressed concern over the intrusion of animals and unauthorised persons into sensitive areas of the airport, stressing that this signals danger for safety and security at the airports.

Tukur called on the Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Oduah-Ogiewonyi to step in and ensure that perimeter fences were erected to ward off animals to avert air disaster, noting that, ”the situation at Kaduna Airport is a disaster in waiting if the authorities refuse to rise up to check the menace.”

Boko Haram Declare Total Jihad in Nigeria

Two Boko Haram suspects held for UN bombing

Two men described by security agents as "notorious leaders of the Boko Haram extremist sect" are being held in connection with last Friday's bombing of the United Nations House in Abuja, the Department of State Services [better known as the State Security Service, SSS] announced in Abuja yesterday.

It said Babagana Ismail Kwaljima, alias Abu Sumayya and Babagana Mali alias Bulama are being held in a military detention facility. The service also declared a third Boko Haram suspect, Mamman Nur wanted in connection with the UN building attack.

It described Mamman Nur as "a notorious Boko Haram element with al-Qaeda links who returned recently from Somalia." It also identified him as the main mastermind of last Friday's blast.

The DSS statement signed by its Assistant Director, Public Relations Marilyn Ogar said, "Owing to various speculations and misrepresentations in the media arising from the bomb attack on the United Nations (UN) building on 26th August, 2011 in Abuja. The Department of State Services (DSS) on behalf of other security agencies wishes to state as follows:

On 18th August, 2011, precise intelligence was obtained by this Service that some Boko Haram elements were on a mission to attack unspecified targets in Abuja in an ash-coloured Toyota Camry vehicle with registration number AA539GBL.

Babagana MALI (a.k.a Bulama). Following their arrests, security was further beefed up in Abuja and its environs. Meanwhile the suspects have made valuable statements and are being held at a military facility.

Investigation has revealed that one Mamman NUR, a notorious Boko Haram element with Al-Qaeda links who returned recently from Somalia, working in concert with the two (2) suspects masterminded the attack on the United Nations (UN) building in Abuja.

Further investigation has also revealed that the car used for the attack was a Honda car with Kano State registration number AV38NSR. It was purchased on 3rd September, 2002 and registered on 3rd December, 2002. The vehicle identification number is 1HGCBA7400A100748, Engine number, F22A72000540.

The security services wish to reiterate their commitments to ensuring that we have a safe, peaceful and secure environment. We want to reassure Nigerians that we have no other country and we must all strive to maintain its unity which is currently being threatened.

We implore all Nigerians to be more security conscious and vigilant, while urging the general public to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could lead to the arrest of Mamman NUR who is hereby declared WANTED. Any person with useful information which could lead to the arrest of the suspect and other accomplices should report to the nearest Police station, military formations or any other security agency."

Police Inspector General Hafiz Ringim hinted while addressing members of the diplomatic community last Tuesday that a breakthrough had been made in the case, although he did not give details. He said President Jonathan would make a broadcast to the nation on developments in the bombing saga, but no such broadcast was made.

On Friday last week, a suspected suicide bomber rammed through two security gates at the UN Building in Abuja, hit the main building and then set off a blast which killed 23 people and injured more than 70 others. The Boko Haram sect, which had claimed responsibility for a similar attack on Police Headquarters last June, also claimed responsibility for the latest bomb attack.

400 Nigerian citizens languish in Chinese prisons

Nigeria's Ambassador to China Aminu Wali says 400 Nigerians are languishing in Chinese jails and that one of them was executed by lethal injection last month.

Wali told a group of Nigerian journalists in Beijing yesterday that most of the convicts were tried for hard drug related offences.

He added that another Nigerian had recently had his death sentence suspended and could finally have it commuted to life imprisonment due to the intervention of the embassy.

"Something is wrong with our value system", he said, adding that he was arranging a stakeholders' meeting with leaders from a geo-political zone in Nigeria where most of the convicts came from.

He lamented that the embassy usually got to know about this group of Nigerians only after they had been arrested.

"As we speak, one of my consular officers is on a prison visit to meet convicted Nigerians or suspects still undergoing trial.

"This embassy was earlier today informed of another arrest and before the end of the day, up to five such letters may be received here," Wali said.

The ambassador said he was visiting Nigerian convicts in Chinese prisons personally on quarterly basis and ensuring that they were fairly comfortable by donating money for their needs.

U.S.,Germany, France, Canada Shut Embassies in Nigeria

AS a fall-out of the August 26, 2011 suicide bomb attack on the United Nations (UN) building in Abuja, leading Western nations have continued to shut their embassies and consulates in the country.

The latest nations to shut down both their embassies in Abuja and consulates in Lagos are the United States, Germany, Canada and France, which closed shop Monday evening.

UN bodies like the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Development Organisation (UNIDO), Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which are housed within the bombed UN Building have already closed operations.

This is just as the UN yesterday day maintained that only 23 people died in the Friday attack.

Giving details of the casualties, via a statement, the United Nations Country Team in Nigeria (UNCT) explained that of the 23, 11, including 10 Nigerians and one Norwegian, were UN staff; nine were non-UN staff and three were persons yet to be identified per- sons.

The latest closures follow the decision of the British Government to close its High Commission in Abuja and Consulate in Kaduna on Monday morning. Unconfirmed reports said the commission may relocate to either Ghana or South Africa.

The Western governments may have decided to close their offices despite assurances Monday evening to members of the Diplomatic Corps by both the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Hafiz Ringim, as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Olugbenga Ashiru, that everything would be done to guarantee their safety.

A statement on the U.S. website reads: 'Today is a public holiday, before now, the security was never like this. I think the bomb blast caused it', he said.

In observance of the Eid-el-Fitr non-working public holiday declared by the Nigerian government, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate in Lagos will be closed for business on Tuesday, August 30 and Wednesday, August 31.

'Visa applicants who had an interview scheduled for one of those days will be contacted with a rescheduled date.

When The Moment visited the embassy, it discovered that the embassy's security personnel, had barricaded all the roads leading to the embassy, subjecting motorists passing through their vicinity to mild checks.

A passer-by, who identified himself as Anthony Udoka, told The Moment that he observed that additional security checks have been introduced since the bomb blast at the UN building last Friday.

A statement from the United Nations Country Team in Nigeria (UNCT), said identification was ongoing as well as investigation at the premises by the appropriate authorities.

The statement reads in part: "The death toll stands at 23: eleven UN staff -10 Nigerians and one Norwegian, nine non-UN staff and three unidentified others. 26 injured persons remain in hospitals and clinics in the Nigerian federal capital'.

'Every effort is being made to reconcile known facts about non-UN staff on site, such as contracted services, cleaners, security guards, and visitors.'

It also confirmed that eight members of staff on life support systems were evacuated to South Africa on air ambulances on Sunday.

'Four other critically-injured staff were also airlifted to South Africa on Monday,' it said.

Abuja Blast - UN to Conduct Global Threat Review

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has said the world body will soon conduct a global threat review following Friday's bomb blast at its office in Abuja. The attack claimed no fewer than 23 people while more than 80 were wounded.

Ban, in remarks to the UN Security Council and a closed-door special session of the General Assembly later on Tuesday in New York, said the UN will "also undertake a full review of the incident and our security measures at UN House."

He promised to share the results of the review with member states "at the first opportunity."

The secretary general said the suicide bomb attack in Abuja was the second major "terrorist attack" on UN premises this year.

In April, seven UN staff were killed in Mazai-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, after a mob enraged by Koran burning in the U.S., stormed a UN compound in Afghanistan.

Ban, who addressed the 193-member General Assembly for the first time after he dispatched two senior UN officials to Abuja, described the UN building in Abuja as "a well built structure with robust security measures."

"What we know is that this attack was the work of a suicide bomber who rammed a sport utility vehicle at high speed through the exit gates of the UN compound," he said.

"The UN House in Abuja, home to 26 UN agencies and programmes, is a well built structure with robust security measures.

"This attack is therefore cause for serious reassessment, not just in Nigeria, and not just at high threat locations, but worldwide," he added.

Ban vowed that the world body would not be deterred from continuing its work, saying " the goal of the UN must be to stay and not leave in difficult security conditions."

"We must carry out our vital work, not lock ourselves behind fortresses," he stressed.

He pledged that the UN would do everything possible to assist the victims of the attack and their families.

Ban also announced that one young Norwegian woman named Ingrid Midtgaard from Oslo was among the 11 UN staff killed in the attack in Abuja.

"Clearly, the UN and our people are being targeted more and more often by terrorists worldwide.

"Too often, it seems we are considered a "soft target. The security of our staff working overseas must be paramount.

"We must draw the lessons learned from Abuja and together we must commit the effort and resources to implement them," he said.

He announced that the Deputy Secretary-General would hold a town hall meeting in New York on Thursday to discuss the tragedy.

Ban thanked the Nigerian government for its assistance in the aftermath of the attack and praised the courage and dedication of the UN team in Abuja.

The Akwa Ibom State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said it arrested 103 suspected drug traffickers in the state in the last eight months. The suspects were made up of 87 males and 16 females.

The command also seized 643.78kilogrammes, 90.4-grammes, and 98.1grammes respectively of cannabis; cocaine and heroine as well as 46 litres of a combination of alcohol and cannabis sativa.

Disclosing this while parading 12 other suspected drug traffickers, including two septuagenarians and a cripple, in the latest arrest, the State Commander of NDLEA, Mrs. Josephine Obi, said 16 other suspects were still on the run.

“Our investigations have revealed that the youths are made to undergo a period of apprenticeship for a year or two, and are settled or rewarded on graduation with two bags of cannabis Sativa to go and set up their own business in another location.

“The dealers continue to use the strategy of selling drugs at public centres like schools, restaurants, clubs, hotels and stadiums in order to avoid the risk of being arrested in their private houses. One Iniobong Archibong was arrested in Aka 1 Primary School and 7.5g of cocaine, 43.6g of heroin and 1.8g of cannabis sativa were recovered from him,” she said.

According to her, large acres of cannabis farms had been destroyed in Ikot Ekpene, Ikono and Ini local government areas of the state. She called on members of the public to support the agency in the fight against drugs by reporting suspected peddlers.

She explained that no fewer than 65 persons had been counselled, two persons rehabilitated, one under rehabilitation while five others were on the waiting list for rehabilitation.

Obi said the septuagenarians were in the habit of recruiting the aged, unemployed youths, minors and physically-challenged persons as agents for their drug activities while they stay out of sight to escape arrest.

Goodluck Jonathan urges Nigerians to unite for greatness

President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, tasked Nigerians to see their diversity as a strength to achieve the common good of the country. He said without unity, Nigeria cannot meet any of its socio-economic challenges.

Speaking when a delegation of the Muslim community in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, led by Vice President Namadi Sambo paid him the traditional Sallah homage at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Jonathan urged all stakeholders to exploit the diverse nature of the country to boost economic development.

Jonathan said without unity, the government could not achieve any of its transformation agenda such as the provision of jobs, security, power and other socio-economic issues that directly impact on the lives of the ordinary Nigerian.

Jonathan said: "We thank all of you and we know as a nation we have challenges within this period. All Nigerians are clamouring for development. We need employment for our young people, we need power for our household use, commercial and industrial activities. We need food for our people, we need security for those who want to move around safely from one point to another. All these are possible if all of us collectively call on Allah to make it possible."

He recalled that all the breakfast sessions he had with prominent Muslim leaders during the Ramadan were to admonish them to continue to pray for the "development, economic growth, peace and security in the land so that we will get foreign direct investments."

Be our brothers keepers

The president explained further that the period of the celebration was one when we have to be our brothers keepers, stressing that "irrespective of the language we speak, irrespective of the part of the world or country we come from, is a period that Allah has made it possible for us to interact."

The president said no country stood on its own now, "even the giant countries need to live with other countries" stressing that "for us to get attraction then we must maintain peace and security in the country."

On the diversity of the nation, the president said: "If we look at ourselves, some of us are tall, some are short, some are fair, some are dark and all is designed by Allah. If Allah wanted all of us to be of the same height, we would have been the same height. So, there is a reason for the diversity and the diversity should be used to help us develop not to separate us."

While urging Muslims in the country "to continue to pray despite the end of Ramadan," he appealed to them to "pray that the commitment of this country, that myself and the vice president and others have made to transform this country comes to a fruition."

He said "no matter the efforts we make, we are humans and if Allah does not sanction it, it will not work. We believe that with your prayers things will be well in this country."

Jonathan reassures

Jonathan reassured that with his new national economic management team, "Nigerians can look forward to visible progress in the fulfilment of the promise of socio-economic revitalisation, job creation and the renewal of national infrastructure in the coming months."

The President, therefore, urged Nigerians to rededicate themselves to supporting government at all times to ensure that the country continues to make steady progress towards the fulfilment of its vast, God-given potentials.

Sambo on bomb attack

Earlier in a remark, Vice President Namadi Sambo, extended his sincere condolences to Nigeria on the recent bomb attack at the United Nations (UN) House, saying the attack was not only on Nigeria but the world in general and prayed that the heinous act "will be stopped by the grace of Almighty Allah."

Sambo further prayed to "Almighty Allah to continue to grant good health and wisdom to our president and that Mr. President will lead us and transform this country as we have already been witnessing within this short period."

He also prayed that "we have peace, love, progressive and poverty is driven out of this country."

Jos erupts again

Jos, the Plateau State capital which had enjoyed relative peace for several weeks erupted in another orgy of violence yesterday, leaving at least 20 dead and over 50 others injured. This happened just as the rampaging Islamic sect, Boko Haram struck again in Maiduguri, Borno State capital killing three people, including a local government chairman.

In the Jos violence, over 50 vehicles and 100 motorcycles were burnt with some of the occupants trapped inside as their vehicles were torched.

Top security chiefs in the state had last weekend met with religious and community leaders to fashion out strategies for a peaceful Sallah celebration in the state.

Eye witnesses gave different versions of what led to the fresh violence. A version said members of the ‘Izala’ Islamic Group who celebrated the end of the Ramadan yesterday were attacked by youths along Rukuba Road, a Christian dominated area while going for prayers at an abandoned mosque located in the area. The mosque was abandoned in the wake of the previous crisis.

However, another version said the Muslim youths going for the prayers, contrary to the directive of the police that they must not carry dangerous weapons to the praying grounds during the Sallah, brandished daggers, knives and other dangerous weapons which they waved dangerously at residents of the area as they drove past.

This was said to have infuriated the residents who were said to have mobilized in preparation for a showdown with the Muslims after the prayers, but were dispersed by members of the Special Task Force (STF) who allegedly shot and killed some of them.

The youths were said to have gone berserk when they were allegedly shot at from inside the mosque and in retaliation they stormed the mosque where they torched parked vehicles and motorcycles. They also allegedly attacked and killed some people inside the mosque.

Unconfirmed reports said some of the rampaging youths were killed when soldiers opened fire to curtail the violence while several were injured and rushed to hospital.

A combined team of the army and the police had to escort scores of Muslims out of the area to safety as angry youths had stationed themselves for a showdown.

Similar killings were reported in other parts like Farin Gada area where our correspondent saw about seven corpses allegedly killed by angry youths being removed by members of the STF.

The tension generated by the violence saw people hurriedly locking up their businesses and running for their lives in most parts of the city.

Boko Haram kills LG chairman, two others

24 hours to the end of the Ramadan, Islamic sect, Boko Haram struck in Maiduguri killing the caretaker chairman of Kukawa local government area of Borno state, Alhaji Lawan Yarayi, alongside two other spare part dealers in Gamboru. Alhaji Yarayi was shot dead Sunday night at his residence in Bulabulin Ngarannam area of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council while the spare part dealers in Gamboru, were killed by two gunmen on a tricycle at the traders’ residence and fled, abandoning the tricycle with which they carried out the killings.

Borno State police commissioner, Simeon Midenda who confirmed the incidents to newsmen on phone said it was after the killers had left that his neighbors raised alarm which prompted policemen to go to the scene.

According to the CP no arrest was made but the police have got a clue which can help in tracking down the gunmen.

It was gathered that the chairman was trailed by the gunmen from Kukawa in Kukawa local government area of the state before he was shot dead at his residence in Maiduguri .

An eye witness who does not want his name in print said that the incident occurred at about 8.45pm on Sunday night

He said the gunmen told the security men at the gate that they were politicians who came to see the chairman before they were allowed into the compound and on sighting the LG boss they opened fire on him and fled.

The body of the chairman was immediately taken to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) morgue and later buried according to Islamic rites.

He said the Borno state government would not relent in its efforts to sustain the “relative peace and social harmony” that has prevailed in the past couple of weeks.

Shettima maintained that the insecurity to lives and property in the state, is however a temporary eclipse, adding that; “the Borno sun will continue shining again.”

Police arrest 50 over UN bomb blast

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Hafiz Ringim yesterday disclosed that 50 suspects have been arrested in connection with last Friday's bomb blast at the United Nations House in Abuja which claimed 23 lives with 73 others still hospitalised.

He said four more injured staff whose condition was considered critical have been flown to South Africa for treatment. Four injured staff had on Sunday been evacuated from the National Hospital Abuja to South Africa.

Ringim who had an interaction with the diplomatic community at the headquarters of the Foreign Affairs Ministry said President Goodluck Jonathan will soon make a pronouncement on progress made so far on police investigation into the blast.

He also disclosed that, his office has received a number of requests for police protection from embassies in Nigeria, since Friday's blast, assuring the diplomatic community of adequate security in Nigeria.

The IG, who was invited by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru to brief the diplomatic corps on the readiness of the nation's security operatives to offer adequate protection, said: "The security agencies have made some arrests and President Jonathan will soon make some pronouncement in that regard because I want to leave that to him to address the nation.

"All the missions are required to request for specific assistance of security in order to feel more secured and it shall be granted as I have been mandated with other security apparatus to beef up security around all the foreign missions, the entire country as well as the whole of African region", he said.

Speaking earlier, Ambassador Ashiru described the incident as an unfortunate one, adding that everything will be done to ensure safety and protection of all the diplomatic corps as well as that of Nigerian people.

He, however, appealed to all stakeholders to rise up and fight the new trend saying, "concerted effort must be made by Nigeria and the international community to combat the new form of terrorism affecting the whole world."

Ashiru also assured the diplomatic corps of adequate and proper security of their embassies and personnel. "I invited the IGP to address and assure you of our efforts and for you to have confidence in what we are doing to protect you and other people in the country," he said.

Some members of the diplomatic corps commended government for its efforts in securing and protecting their lives, assuring the federal government of their readiness to help in fighting terrorism in Nigeria.

Four more victims flown to South Africa

Meanwhile, four more victims of the bomb attack, were Monday flown out of Nigeria to South Africa, bringing the number of seriously injured who were evacuated since Saturday to eight.

The Co-ordinator of the UN Communications team in Nigeria, Sina Chuma-Mkandawire, who disclosed this, however declined to release the names of UN staff affected by the blast.

"We are not in a position to give you the names or the nationalities of those affected during the attack. What we can give you are the current figures of those affected", she said.

Flood Renders 7,000 Homeless in Lagos

There was an ocean surge at the Alfa beach in Eti-Osa local council development area of Lagos state, rendering no fewer than 7,000 residents homeless.

The state government has however declared that it does not have the required resources to curtail the reoccurrence of the calamity as well as unable to ameliorate the plight of the affected Nigerians.

It has thus appealed to the federal government to wake to the responsibility, noting that the only the massive and enduring structure put in place by the state government could curb future reoccurrence of the calamity.

It would be recalled that there was similar surge about a month ago with both President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Babatunde Fashola separately visiting the place with pledges to assist the community, though with nothing meaningful coming out from the visits.

However, another ocean surge occurred two days ago, this time sweeping almost half of the whole area as it destroyed mostly the economic values of the place.

The state team comprising of the commissioners of environment, Mr. Tunji Bello and his counterpart in the waterfront infrastructure development, Prince Adesegun Oniru visited the devastated area yesterday where they lamented the plight of the people.

According to Oniru who blamed the surge on the effect of the climate change while addressing newsmen at the site, "this is a major surge; you all can see that all the tourism activities in this area have collapsed."

Asked about the lasting solution to the crisis, he said, "The answer to this place is same we did at the Lagos beach and of course we don't have such money again in Lagos; if the federal government does not respond to this, nature will not cease to wreck havoc."

Contributing, Bello said, "Lagos cannot afford to do it, only the federal government can do it because it has many and better resources including the ecological fund to attend to this kind of natural disaster."

Also addressing newsmen, the head of the community, Chief Yusuf Atewolara recalled that both President Jonathan and Fashola at different times visited them when they had similar case about a month ago, saying, "About a month ago, we had similar surge that claimed a great part of our land, the governor came while the president also visited us a week after, they hovered above us in chopper and at the end the president promised us assistance but up till now we have not received any assistance.

"But two days ago, another surge happened, this time it claimed triple what it claimed a month ago because it has destroyed the whole of the major road here; it has destroyed several million naira worth properties. We are hereby pleading with the federal government, state government and other agencies to come to our aid to save coastal areas; the whole road is gone," he decried.

Fraudsters who conned pensioner out of £245,000 jailed

Two fraudsters who convinced a pensioner she had won a £5.7m lottery jackpot before conning her out of her life-savings were jailed for a total of 50 months today.

Joshua Obasuyi, 49, and Julius Oweka, 48, were part of a Nigerian gang who tricked U.S. Professor Marie Lowery, 80, a retired lecturer at the University of Houston, Texas, into handing over £245,000.

She was strung along by the London-based conmen for nearly four years, after responding to a spam e-mail that told her she had won the jackpot in a prize draw.

Obasuyi and Oweka were caught in May 2009 in police sting operation following a tip-off from the FBI.

Detectives found more than £66,000 duped from 'lottery winners' around the world had been paid into a bank account at the Nat West in Grays, Essex,

Judge Rosamund Horwood-Smart QC jailed Obasuyi for 30 months and Oweka for 20 months at the Old Bailey, telling them that they were obviously 'well-versed in this type of scam'.

She said.'You were both involved in fraudulent activities with others, and there is evidence of more than one victim.

'In view of Prof Lowery, who was of course vulnerable, she was taken advantage of over many years - remorselessly and without mercy.

'This type of fraud takes advantage of the hopes, dreams and gullibility of others, and is very common and very harmful to our society.'

The court heard that in April 2005, Prof Lowery received an e-mail claiming to be from the fictitious 'Great British Lottery', in which she was congratulated for winning a £5.7m jackpot.

She initially agreed to pay £180 to process her winnings, and later complied with a string of demands for greater sums to be transferred via Western Union.

Throughout the scam, she was presented with bogus certificates and court documents in an effort to convince her that the arrangement was legitimate.

In November 2008, Prof Lowery was e-mailed by a man calling himself Chris Ascuncion, who told her he was a 'claims attorney' acting on behalf of the lottery company and asked for even more money to be transferred.

After beginning to suspect that she was being defrauded, she passed the e-mail on to the FBI - who immediately recognised the scammers' methods.

She arranged with the gang to fly to London and hand over the latest payment, £,3,996 in person.

Detectives from the City of London police then tapped her phone as she spoke with Obasuyi and agreeing to meet at the Crown Plaza Hotel, near Blackfriars Bridge, central London, on May 20, 2009.

Officers pounced at the meeting and were led to Oweka through his contact with Obasuyi

They later raided the gang's office in Croydon, south London, where they found a treasure trove of kit used to carry out the frauds - including a locked briefcase containing bundles of paper with a thin layer of real US dollars on top.

Anthony Wilcken, prosecuting, said computer evidence found at the unit showed they had targeted 'hundreds' of other people, whose telephone numbers and computer passwords were recorded.

'This was undoubtedly part of the fraudster's kit,' he said.

'The documents relating to frauds of that sort were manifest and numerous.'

None of the money Prof Lowery passed on has been recovered.

Obasuyi, from Plaistow, east London, admitted conspiracy to defraud, and two counts of acquiring criminal property.

Oweka, from Croydon, south London, denied conspiracy to defraud, two counts of acquiring criminal property and possessing an article for use in fraud, but was found guilty on all charges following a trial.

Boko Haram claims responsibility for UN bombing

Islamist extremist group, Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the UN bombing in Abuja.

A caller told the BBC on phone that it carried out the attack.

Also, another Boko Haram 'spokesman' claiming responsibility for the deadly attack said, they were guided by the wisdom of Allah.

"Through the wisdom of Allah, we have launched the attack with absolute precision," the man who identified himself as Abu Darda said in a telephone call to an AFP journalist.

"The attack was carefully scripted and executed. We have said it several times that the UN is one of our prime targets."

The veracity of his claim could not be verified."We will provide details of the martyr who carried out the suicide attack," the man said.

"More attacks are on the way, and by the will of Allah we will have unfettered access to wherever we want to attack. We have more than 100 men who are willing to lay down their lives for the cause of Allah."

The blast at about 11 a.m. left a gaping hole in the compound, which houses about 400 people working for 26 U.N. humanitarian and development agencies. It's not clear how many were present, but dozens were injured

.This marks the first attack on the U.N. by militants in Nigeria. Past attacks by Boko Haram, a group that models itself on the Afghan Taliban, have been launched on national government targets, mainly in the north. The largest previous bombing, of the police headquarters in Abuja in June, killed six.

Okonjo-Iweala Unveils Governments Economic Priorities

The Federal Government plans to cut recurrent expenditure, especially overheads, and keep the budget deficit at 3 per cent, Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said.

She also said the government was planning to boost economic productivity and infrastructure investment in power, road and rail to create jobs, adding: "We need to maintain macroeconomic stability. We need to manage our fiscal situation in a more prudent manner. Monetary and fiscal policies must work hand-in-hand."

Recurrent spending currently accounts for 74 per cent of the budget, but Okonjo-Iweala, who doubles as the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, said the government would trim spending to "a more reasonable figure" of 70 per cent in the next four years.

She was speaking at a press briefing in Abuja yesterday.

Okonjo-Iweala said she supported Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN's) policy of pegging the naira to the dollar to provide stability for businesses, promising to work with Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to have an exchange rate that reflects the economy.

To control inflation, the CBN targets naira stabilisation by keeping the rate within 3 per cent above or below N150 per dollar. She also said local contractors are owed $34 billion by the Federal Government.

The country's external debts, she said, currently stand at about $5.7billion, bringing the total indebtedness to $39.7 billion.

She also said that turning the Nigerian economy around was attainable but could not be done overnight considering the distortions suffered by the economy in the past several years. Although she noted that the nation was in a comfort zone vis-a-vis the ratio of its total debt stock put at 20 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP), she however expressed concern on the rising domestic debt profile, which is about 17.5 per cent of the GDP.

"We need to try and reduce domestic borrowing. We can't stop overnight because of the shocks, but we have to be cautious on domestic debt," the minister said, noting that contrary to expectations from certain quarters, there would be no new economic blueprint.

According to her, the Vision 20:2020 blueprint and the Transforming Nigeria Document would remain the bedrock of the economic agenda, noting that the major thrust of the administration's economic agenda is jobs and pro-jobs growth.

She stated that all the credible opinion surveys showed that jobs and infrastructure, especially power, are the two top priorities Nigerians want government to focus on.

Okonjo-Iweala listed security, infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing, housing and construction, the entertainment industry, education and health as the key sectoral areas that needed to be given priority attention.

Nigeria is the highest exporter of crude oil in Africa

The Presidency yesterday began a count down to President Goodluck Jonathan's 100 days in office, with a declaration that one of the president's achievements was Nigeria's recovery of her place as the highest exporter of crude oil in Africa.

The government announced that Nigeria had again overtaken the Republic of Angola in oil production, following the return of peace to the troubled Niger Delta.

Nigeria currently produces about 2.4 million barrels per day (bpd) up from about 1.8 million bpd at the behest of the crisis in the Niger Delta.

Dr Reuben Abati, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, said the sharp rise in oil production had again put the country as the second largest oil exporter in the world, next to Saudi Arabia.

He said: "Boosted by the overwhelming success of the amnesty programme of the current administration, Nigeria's oil production expanded by 20 per cent and she reclaimed her foremost position as Africa's largest oil exporter, which she had hitherto lost to Angola.

"Nigeria sets a new record by being recognized by OPEC in July as the second largest oil exporter in the cartel, second only to Saudi Arabia. It is the first time Nigeria has recorded such a feat, he added.

English Premiere Leugue Trophy comes to Lagos

English Premier League trophy currently on global tour in Africa continent was yesterday in Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria. It was received by Lagos State governor Babatunde Fashola in his office located in Alausa area of the state.

While receiving the trophy presented by the management of Multi Choice limited, Fashola said the English Premier League (EPL) has demonstrated the capacity to create a good economy for the tournament.

He said the country, especially Lagos, is challenged by the success of the EPL which he said started from very humble background, saying it has metamorphosed into a global economy that is viable and providing livelihood for many. "This is what we aimed to do and we have started it here, to mix education curriculum of young talented footballers with sporting commitment and we want to ensure those who participate in the Lagos Junior League are actually students in schools and we think that if we can create this partnership between school and football, we might be up to something very big.

I recall as a student that some of our colleagues used to play for big clubs like Leventis United, Mandillas, Wema Bank, Union Bank, LSDPC and so on and after school, they earn more income to support their family and I think that at this time when there is a lot of youth unemployment, this is one of the things that we can tap into.

With the followership that football has in this country and all of us that are involved in the administration of football at various levels we must get involved and grow it into big economies. I expect that we would be receiving Multi Choice hand in partnership as we go forward and as we provide a night away from destitution and violence."

Multi Choice Managing Director, Mr. Joseph Hundah, said it was important to present it to the governor who is a fan of Manchester United.
