From the 12th to the 15th centuries, Ife was a powerful, wealthy and cosmopolitan city-state in West Africa, in what is now Nigeria. The people of Ife developed a distinctive style of sculpture, which is on display in London to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Nigerian independence.
