P-Square landlord misbehaving

A Landlord named Chief Charles Nwangwan seems to be giving the famous Nigerian musical duo a tough time with his duplex that P-Square reside in with their  brother/Manager Jude Okoye. The Landlord is trying to evict P-Square from the house located in Omole Estate,Ikeja, Lagos because according to him P-Square breached their contractual agreement by converting the boys' quarters of the crib into a music studio.

Plus the vexed landlord said that Jude Okoye doesn't let him see P-Square, who are the ones that actually paid for the rent of the crib with N.1.7 million for 3 years.

Jude Okoye recently spoke about the issue with the landlord and Jude said the Landlord visits whenever he likes without notice and that he took offence when P-Square did not greet him or entertain him with his preferred wine of choice. Okoye then insisted that he is entitled to privacy even if the house is rented.

P-Square have been given 2 weeks to move out of the house in which the lease they paid for does not expire until 2010. Well I'm sure if the landlord persists in his mean spirited actions the successful music group can easily find another house to live and practice their music in peace!

Nigerian actress turns down lead role in Hollywood movie

Rising Nollywood star Omoni Oboli recently turned down the opportunity to play a lead role in a Hollywood movie in which she was offered $500,000 to star in.  You're probably like what??...I was. But here's the catch though, the role required her to be torrally NAKED in three scenes. Plus she was expected have sensual sex in the movie with three different characters. Omoni was like NA LIE!!! and started negotiations with the producer in which her terms were she'll only do the movie if all three scenes were removed or modified.

Producer man did not play ball with Omoni, and refused to remove or modify the script thus leaving Omoni with little choice but to turn down the offer. I'll have to commend Omoni for standing firm on her moral ground being that she's married with three kids. Omoni Oboli was contacted by phone about turning down the opportunity of a life time and this is what she had to say:

“I made it known to him (the producer) that in my culture, you are only subject to your husband. I truly love my husband and he does too,”

“I don't believe actresses in Nigeria have gone so low to get this kind of pay, but there are some who believe that acting nude can help them get a house in VGC or Lekki; they should, however, think twice"

Nigerian priest kidnaps woman and demands N4m ransom

It’s getting so bad these days that even a man of the cloth has gotten into the kidnapping business. The catholic priest was arrested by the Nsukka Divisional Police in Nigeria and transferred to the state Anti-robbery squad for further confession investigation. It’s reported that Chief Reminus Okenyi, the husband of the woman kidnapped contacted the police when he noticed his wife’s car unattended to with her cell phone and bag still in the car. He then received a call from a person asking if he had any problem with the priest (priest name withheld) then demanded N4 million ($27,080) for the release of his wife. After promising the caller that he’ll get the money, the good Chief did the right thing and contacted the police instead. After two days of searching for the priest. He was finally arrested when he stopped by the police station to drop a petition for the Inspector-General of Police. The police were able to get a confession from the priest (the irony) to the crime and he also provided information that led to the safe rescue of the kidnapped woman.

Nuhu Ribadu Testifies before U.S. Financial Services Committee

Watch Ribadu in News  |  View More Free Videos Online at Veoh.com

Former Chairman of Nigeria's Economic Crimes Commission (EFCC) who was fired in 2008 for apparently doing his job too well, as he exposed and charged high profile Nigerian bankers, politicians, former ministers for corruption and money laundering. Ribadu recently testified before the U.S. Financial Services Committee, watch the video up top to hear what he had to say.

Here's also an awesome statement by Ribadu  taken from an interview he did with The Guardian earlier in the year:

“If you fight corruption, it fights back. If you go after petty corruption nothing will happen to you, But if you go after grand corruption, you’d be taking on the politicians and they have the money. And they will come after you, But you can choose to go to bed with them and you’d continue to be Chairman or Director, and you can go to conferences and enjoy tea and collect estacodes. But I made a choice, I decided to go after the big ones, even if they were the ones that put me there, I investigated President Obasanjo, I took his statement myself. I went after his daughter, a Senator, I went after Governors, I charged all of them to court. One of them offered me $500, 000 US and a house in Seychelles and an aircraft, but I rejected all of that. By the time I left EFCC, I had 275 convictions in a country that never had one on cases of grand corruption, I charged the Vice President to court - somebody from my village. I proved that it can be done.”

If Dr. Okonjo runs for office, Ribadu should be her Vice President!

Economist expert brews rescue plan for Nigerian economy

RENOWNED economist, Hernando De Soto-Polar from Peru yesterday said that for a developing country like Nigeria to overcome economic woes, there is urgent and dire need for combinations and standardisation in policy implementation in the country.

According to him, combination will involve the possibility of having collaborative efforts aimed at producing something, while standardisation will require the proper documentation of resources and property. He stressed that without standardisation, property values are worthless, which would erode on the capital adequacy of an economy.

De Soto-Polar was the guest speaker at the 70th birthday lecture organised for Mr. Pascal Dozie, Chairman of Diamond Bank Plc in Lagos yesterday.

The Peruvian, also a renowned author, whose lecture was entitled: "Unlocking hidden capital in developing country," said that 70 to 80 per cent of capital that could have been used in the development of developing countries were dead, adding that over 70 per cent of such economy are run by the informal sector.

According to Hernando, the secret of the developed economies of the world is that they had been able to standardise and formalise their languages of trade, stressing that the abundant dead capital in the developing countries needed to be converted for the good of the countries.

He noted that the globalised economy was working in the direction of standardisation, stating that, lack of legal framework, particularly on land and capital hinders access to finance in developing countries.

"The informal sector still controls most part of the economy in this part of the world. The work is on how to channel those funds to the productive sector of the economy, which is the formal sector.

" Therefore, the whole idea of business or economy is about standardisation, which allows for globalisation and development," he added.

The renowned author explained that with enormous human and material resources embedded in a country like Nigeria, there should be no room for under development,

"The system of capital utilisation is a system of science and its application is all encompassing. Therefore, to achieve much in this area, there is need for collaboration by all."

According to him, unlocking hidden capital in developing countries would require identifying and exploring the un-utilised resources embedded in the country and at the same time channelling them towards infrastructure development with adequate sustainability.

He said there is need for cooperation and division of labour, stressing that looking at the environment, everything that surround us came as result of combination, in which we have been able to coordinate ourselves and channel abilities collectively towards achieving the goals of development.

De Soto-Polar averred that countries like India, Japan, Israel, Malaysia and Singapore are thriving in the global economy today, because they employ the ability of the enormous human resources at their disposals.

De Soto Polar said, in Peru 50 per cent of the economy is in the hands of the poor and that the government of the day has put up measures towards channelling those funds back to the formal sector.

World Bank states 18 million Nigerians will become poorer in 2009

The Word Bank has collected  research carried out by the Bretton Woods institution, and according to the analysis, looks like Nigeria will account for 18 of the 90 million Africans that will fall below the poverty line in 2009.

World Bank Country Director, Dr. Onno Ruhl, said economic forecast for 2009 might not be feasible because the current global financial crisis was getting worse and therefore difficult to predict how soon it would end.

"So far, every next step has been more negative than the previous. The average African will be poorer in 2009 because predicted growth rate of two per cent will be much lower than birth rate," he stated.

Dr. Onno Ruhl also disclosed that the Federal Government has approached the World Bank for a $1 billion loan to fight the malaria.

Ruhl also mentioned that  the World Bank was well disposed to the request because malaria accounts for the death of three million children yearly.

The board of the Word Bank will be meeting soon to consider the request as Nigeria reportedly spends N12 billion yearly to fight Malaria.

The Debt Management Office (DMO) recently put Nigeria's foreign debt at $3.7 billion, in the proportion of 40 per cent indebtedness by the 36 states while the Federal Government accounts for 60 per cent.

Apparently fearing that the fresh borrowing could return Nigeria to the Paris and London Clubs debt trap, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Mr. Ehigie Uzamere, when he led his members to DMO on an oversight, said the Executive had not been complying with the provisions of DMO Act 2003 in contracting new loans.

But the World Bank official said the fresh loan being sought by Nigeria, would be under the concessionary window of the institution in the form of additional funding for the Roll Back Malaria project in seven states in which each household would be provided with two mosquito bed nets.

Ruhl's statement is also seen as lead to claims that the Federal Government had initiated discussions on a loan from the World Bank to plug the deficit in revenue as falling oil earnings eat into its finances.

Naija guy 419's American businessman and collects $1m

A Nigerian, Taiye Ogboyomi, was last Thursday charged before a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for allegedly duping an American of $1m.

The American businessman, Mr. Brandon Benson, narrated in graphic details before the court how Ogboyomi, obtained the money from him under false pretence.

The American, who is the President of Pipeline North Energy Inc, USA, was brought into the country by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to testify in a case of Advance Fee Fraud brought against the suspect.

Our correspondent gathered that in his testimony before the court last Tuesday and Thursday, the American businessman said that Ogbonyomi, who claimed to be the Chairman of Energy Spread Network Limted, had sometime in 2006 contacted and told him that he was a crude oil marketer with large quantity of crude oil for sale.

A source at the EFCC said, “An agreement was subsequently signed online by both parties for the sale of 1.985 million barrel of crude oil. This made the victim send the first instalment of $229,000 and another $ 5,000 on November 6, 2006 into the accused company’s domiciliary account with First Inland Bank Plc.

“The payment was said to be for Charter Party agreement.

“Ogbonyomi demanded the payment of $159,000 for documentation at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation. This the suspect said was to enable him to obtain Certificate of Origin, Certificate of Quantity, Bill of Lading, Cargo Manifest, Tanker Village Report and Master’s receipt of documents.

“When the documents were eventually sent to the American businessman, he was further convinced to wire $425,000 to the fraudster who claimed the fund was for the warranty of title. That was shortly before another $180,000 was sent to the accused to seal the deal bringing the total sum lost to the fraudulent transaction to $989,000.”

Our correspondent gathered that investigations by EFCC showed that the entire documents sent to the victim were forged by the suspect to make the business transaction look genuine.

Ah, see me trouble. Ben Stiller already has some serious source material to gather for the 419 movie he's about to make.

Action Congress accuses Government of Deceit over Fuel Scarcity

The Nigerian government under head of state President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has been accused by the Action Congress of Nigeria of "engaging in governance by deceit over the cause of the current fuel scarcity across the country."

Lai Mohammed who is the National Publicity Secretary for the Action Congress made these following statements "Lies, it is clear that the government itself helped to set the stage for the fuel crisis as a prelude to increasing fuel prices under an ill-advised deregulation policy."

Further statements made by the party are "This fuel crisis, which has further worsened the plight of Nigerians, started almost immediately the government flew its deregulation kite, which indeed is a euphemism for raising fuel prices. Unfortunately, instead of leveling with Nigerians, the government has shifted all the blame to oil marketers who had refused to import at the level they were doing before. Alas, it is not just the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that is Papa Deceiving Pikin. This government, sired by the PDP, is also deceiving its citizens."

Mohammed lastly added: "Nigerians are sadly back to the better-forgotten-days of fuel scarcity, which can only further impoverish a people who have had to generate their own power, provide their own portable water, build their own roads, ensure the security of their lives and property and generally fend for themselves in the absence of responsible governance."

For a country that's one of the top producers of the most valuable commodity in the industrial world. It's a pretty sorry state of affairs. I remember how Obasanjo tried to break it down a few months ago in this video interview with the BBC by explaining how the Nigerian population is extremely higher than other oil rich prospering countries like Saudi Arabia. So that makes it okay for people in Nigeria to be queuing up for days just to fill up their tanks?

Ben Stiller making Nigerian 419 film

Hollywood star Ben Stiller who in recent years jump started his career with mega hits like Night at the Museum, and Tropic Thunder in which he starred and directed, has signed on to direct a film based on one of Nigeria's claim to infamy, the ever so popular Nigerian Letter. Unfortunately everyone has forgotten us for Jay Jay Okocha and mostly associate us with those scam emails they get in their inbox and junkmail for the lucky ones.

The film will be about a banker from Chicago who falls victim to the 419 runs that involves someone claiming to be a Nigerian prince needing help to syphon some money from Nigeria to the States via a gullible or extremely greedy (or both) American. Our banker from Chicago so happens to be such.

Surprisingly enough, this film isn't actually going to be your typical slapstick comedy you usually expect from Ben Stiller. The film is actually being set up as a drama, with just a sprinkle of comedy that's meant to bring light to the hardships and desperate things people have to do to get by in third world countries such as Nigeria. I'm seriously looking forward to the film and will be keeping a close watch on the development of the project. My one big question is, dey go shoot am for Naija or just neglect authenticity and cut expenses by shooting in some yeye studio in Hollywood. Anyhow sha, if they decide to be legit, I get land for Asaba they fit use because I don't want to see the nonsense I saw in Wolverine X-MEN Origins...that was my favorite part of the movie though :)

Still no justice for the APO SIX killings

Till this day, the killings by police forces of six young (Ekene Isaac Mgbe, Ifeanyin Ozor, Chinedu Meniru, Paulinus Ogbonna and Anthony and Augustina Arebu) Nigerians in Apo,Abuja, Nigeria in June,2005 has yet to be resolved. All that's been been gotten from this tragic human injustice is a $20,300 compensation to each of the victims families and an apology from the government on behalf of the police, after an inquiry set by former head of state Obasanjo.

But after nearly four years none of the police officers accused of this shockingly evil crime have been brought to justice. Someday the vital element we know as"RULE OF LAW" in which countries are built upon will be recognized by the people in power. Until then...God help Nigeria.

And the second award went to NASRDA's Telemedicine Pilot Project. Kaduna and Benue State governments received honorable mentions.

The awards aim to recognise the work of African governments in the effective use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for public services delivery.

More than 30 applications were short-listed from Angola, Botswana, Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, The Gambia, Tunisia and Zambia.

Only 12 "innovative projects" were selected to receive awards last Thursday at the conference gala dinner in Addis Ababa, sponsored by UNECA and the government of Canada.

Nigerian won in the category of economic and financial e-services delivery through the entry of Chams Partnership with Osun State government on Implementation of Enterprise Government e-Portal.

The UN stated "this is an ambitious project for bridging the urban-rural access gap and brings e-services opportunities to local communities."

Obafemi Martins possibly returning to Inter Milan

Magpie hero Obafemi Martins might be leaving the Newcastle Faithful and returning back to SERIA A side Inter Milan if Newcastle United are relegated.

It was reported yesterday that Inter were planning a bid for Marrins, who was a top striker for the club around 3 seasons ago. Obafemi Martins shared with reporters that he now switches his TV off because it makes him "sad" when he watches the predicament that Newcastle is in. He's been compelled to ditch his confessed addiction to Sky Sports and focus on making sure the Toon Army don't see their beloved club booted out of premiership football.

Martins had this to add about Sky Sports and the status of Newcastle United.

"I don't look at Sky Sports right now. I used to enjoy it to see how other teams got on. But I just want to focus on Newcastle United right now," he told the Newcastle Chronicle. "

"Only our results count at the moment. If we are doing well it is fun to spend time watching other teams. I look at everything, but at the moment we don't need to. If I tried doing it now it would just make me sad."

I've been a Newcastle supporter since the early 90's, and seeing the club in such a deplorable state shivers my timbers. Under Newcastle Legend Alan Shearer my club hasn't been able to score more than one goal. Mike Ashley's intention I guess were in the right place, but after letting Keegan go, the club has been in a downward spiral. I dey lose hope :(

Marrins is a really good boy sha. Before he goes back to Inter he should reach Naija  and do another PSA.

Nigerian executed in China

The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign affairs yesterday announced the execution of Mr. Chibuzor Vituz in China. He was found guilty of illicit drug trafficking (big no no in China) and was actually executed on April 23,2009 at 11:00 hours but for some reason that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to explain, this information was only officially released to the media yesterday.

The Nigerian Embassy in Beijing had this to say about the case:

"The case of Mr Ezekwem had been on for some time and the Embassy had kept a close watch on the proceedings throughout the period of his trial to ensure that he had a fair hearing throughout the period of his trial. The Mission's plea for mitigation of the death sentence was rejected and the death sentence passed on him was sadly eventually carried out in accordance with the Laws of the People's Republic of China.

Nigerians are known to be very enterprising, you seem to find us in every nook and cranny on earth doing quite well for ourselves in some cases. But unfortunately, the criminally inclined amongst us share this same entrepreneurial spirit as well.

In june, 2008. Two Nigerians were executed for trafficking illegal drugs in Indonesia, and 18 more Nigerians are still on death row in there.

Nigeria's approach to the Swine Flu

Omo, I honestly feel this whole swine flu business is another ploy by the media and probably even pharmaceutical companies to create unnecessary hype. And even so, Naija folks blood dey strong well well. If people in Naija can chest Malaria like no mans business, then this swine flu should be nothing to be paranoid about.

Despite Naija folks Wolverine like immunity and regeneration capability, the Nigerian government has been busy taking necessary precautions. It's reported that the Nigerian government has ordered 2 million doses of Tamiflu (Tami kini??) which is a Swiss-manufactured drug used to treat human cases of bird and swine flu.

Mr. Niyi Ojuolape who is a spokesman for the Nigerian Health Ministry had this to add "The federal government has begun the process of emergency procurement of additional doses and stockpile in case we have human cases"

Imagine such shenanigans, when not a single case of the AH1N1 strain of the virus that causes swine flu has  yet to be reported in the whole of Africa. Someone has gone and carried money to buy 2 million doses of medication that we probably won't need. See contract, people are just going to end up chopping money as usual when they won't go and fix NEPA!

Update on how Canadian Julie Ann Mulligan was released

A contact in Kaduna, Nigeria who we'll call Chaj for security reasons has provided some insight on how Julie Ann Mulligan was released by her Kidnappers. This is what Chaj had to say:

"Dear all,

I'm a Kaduna-based Rotarian who is conversant with the facts, having been present at the SSS office on the day she was released to officials of the Canadian High Commission.

She wasn't "let go", so to speak.

SSS officials apprehended Christain Ogwuzo at the point of collecting the ransom. But the driver of the car he came in managed to get away, and apparently informed the member of their gang who was on a dirt road about 2 kilometres away, waiting for signal to release the lady upon collecting the ransom(as negotiated by an SSS lady posing as a Rotarian).

He was apparently informed by the boltaway guy that the operation had flopped, so he abandoned her there. She was found by some okada riders, loitering on the road, and taken to the local village head who in turn handed her to the nearby police post. She was taken to the police headquarters where the now arrested kidnappers and the landlord of the house she was kept had also be taken to.

That explains the little controversy between the police and SSS over who takes glory for the success of the operation.

She was able to identify the kidnappers, though some are still on the run.

We thank God no harm befell her; and that they were caught. Success in this, would have embolded them and other criminals to go into this "business" full-time in Kaduna. And you can bet children will be their targets.

All is well that ends well.Smiley"

Thanks Chaj, and hopefully this will deter incidents like this from happening again. Here is the link for the previous article on this story.

Forest Whitaker hanging out in Nollywood

Forest Whitaker was chilling along side Genevieve Nnaji, Stephanie Okereke, and other Nollywood starlets at the African Adopt initiative charity ball that coincided with the 2009 African Movie Academy Awards held in Lagos, Nigeria.

I talked about Will Smith and Genevieve in a movie together the other time. Seeing the new Igbo Chief Forest Whitaker balancing at a charity event in lagos, Nollywood and Hollywood coming together has never seemed so plausible. Hit this link to check out the pics that were taken at the charity event.
