John Mikel Obi pleads with kidnappers

Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi, whose father was abducted last Friday in Jos has appealed to Nigerians to help find his father.

He also pleaded with the would-be kidnappers to release his father, even as he also appealed for information on the whereabout of his father.

Mikel said he and his family are yet to hear anything regarding his father's whereabouts or who might have taken him, and he made a direct appeal for his father's release.

"Please just let him go," he said. "He's just an old man, he hasn't done any harm to anyone as far as I know and I don't know why he has been taken."

With no contact made and no ransom demand yet received, Mikel is seeking information and help from anyone who can provide it.

"Nigeria is the country I am from, I have always tried to help the country in every way I can, playing for the country, serving the country. This is the time for the country to help me in this situation," Mikel told Sky Sports News. "I am just going to say, whoever has got my dad, whoever knows where my dad is, should please contact me and hopefully he should be released."

His father's transport company, M.C. Obi Transport, was deserted on Monday when our correspondent visited.

It was graveyard silence at the company on Monday as passengers could not be sported at the premises except few staffs on duty.

The company did not operate any scheduled service since Saturday when the matter was reported to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Plateau State Police command.

He was said to have left office at about 6 pm with his own car but did not reach home.

"We called him through out Friday, but his phone was ringing without reply and by Saturday, it was not going through at all again," one of his staffs who pleaded anonymity to Daily independent on Monday. Attempts to reach Mikel's mother was unsuccessful as at press time.

However, Plateau state Police Commissioner, Emmanuel Dipo Ayeni, told The Associated Press that Michael Obi disappeared from the state capital Jos on Friday. Ayeni said he had no other details.

"We are still searching to find his location," Ayeni said.

Nigeria Police spokesman, Olusola Amore, said no one had seen Mikel's father since 6 p.m. Friday, when he left work to return home.

London-based Sport Entertainment & Media Group, Mikel's management company, said no ransom demand had been made. It said Chelsea was looking at "security issues" after the abduction.

"Mikel was informed by his manager prior to the Stoke tie against Chelsea and decided to play so as not to let down his team and family," the media group said on Twitter.

Mikel has played with Chelsea since 2006. He previously played for Nigerian Premier League club Plateau United, Nigeria's Under-20 squad and Norwegian club Lyn.

"We will give Mikel and his family our full support at this most difficult time," Chelsea said on its website.

Jos, Plateau state capital where Mikel's father resides, has witnessed thousands death in recent years in religious and ethnic violence rooted largely in political and economic issues.

However, Mikel said the kidnapping shocked him because his family never had any problems there before.

"I have always thought one day something like this can happen, but where my family lives is a very secure and safe place," he said.

Kidnappings in Plateau state are a rarity when compared to Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta, where militants and criminal gangs often kidnap foreigners for ransom. Middle class Nigerian families also increasingly find themselves targeted in the country's East as well.

It isn't the first time a soccer player's family has been targeted in Nigeria. In 2008, gunmen abducted the younger brother of Everton defender Joseph Yobo as he left a nightclub in Port Harcourt, the delta's largest city. The brother was released unharmed about two weeks later, though it was unclear if a ransom had been paid.

Michael Obi's abduction comes after a Forbes magazine survey in June listed Mikel as the seventh highest-paid African player in Europe. The magazine listed Mikel's salary as $5.8 million a year.

HIV-positive man, 40, rapes underage girls

Gombe State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Thursday paraded 40-year-old Gambo Abare, an HIV-positive man from Gadam village, for allegedly raping a five-year-old girl.

Briefing newsmen on the development, NSCDC Commandant in the state, Altine Sani, said the alleged rapist was arrested in the act at about 6pm in his grain-milling machine shop.

Little Ramatu, according to the commandant, was sent on errand by her parents when she was lured into the shop with sweets where she was defiled.

Abare, who tested positive to HIV, admitted defiling Ramatu and also confessed to raping five other underage girls within the same week.

He disclosed to journalists that one of his victims was his niece, also an underage.

He said he had been in the act of raping underage girls since last year and the same shop had been his crime scene.

Ramatu’s father, Malam Mohammed Bala, said he sent the girl to take some food to her grandmother to enable the old woman to break the day’s fast.

He alerted of the heinous defilement of his daughter by some almajiris and that informed his rushing to nearby NSCDC office which immediately deployed men in the scene to effect the arrest of Abare.

He will soon be charged to court.

Video - Part 2 of documentary on human trafficking between Nigeria and Italy

In the second part of the special investigation, The Nigerian Connection II, Juliana Ruhfus follows the trail from Italy back to Benin City in Nigeria, from where women, desperately seeking an escape from grinding poverty, are trafficked to Europe.

To pay for their travel, many of them incur massive debts to organised crime gangs in the false belief that a lucrative regular job awaits them at the other end. Often they are forced to undergo a Juju oath-swearing ritual that commits them to repaying the money on pain of death or insanity.

When they arrive in Europe, they discover the only way they can do this is by agreeing to work in the sex trade. A Juju priest who is involved in the trade justifies the use of ritual practices on the grounds that he is offering a service to the community.

But as Juliana discovers, it is not just traditional African religions in West Africa that contribute to this trade on bonded labour. Evangelical Christian pastors have been involved too.

Former World Bank Managing Director Okonjo-Iweala sworn in as new Finance Minisiter

Former Managing Director of the World Bank, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who was sworn-in yesterday by President Goodluck Jonathan as the Minister of Finance declared that her main priority as she resumed duties was to create jobs which was a key component of the president's transformation agenda.

She made the declaration after she took oath of office, even as President Jonathan said that Dr Okonjo-Iweala and other ministers who were formerly based abroad before being invited to join the cabinet will not be paid salaries and allowances in foreign currencies.

Meanwhile, the President has also constituted the National Economic Management Team, NEMT, which will be inaugurated today with Dr Okonjo-Iweala as the Co-ordinator of the team.

Okonjo-Iweala who fielded questions from State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, was not comfortable with a question from reporters on the ongoing reforms of the banking sector by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, stating that the CBN doesn't have any reform, apart from President Jonathan's reforms.

"There is no reform package by the CBN and no reform package by the Ministry of Finance. There is a reform package for Nigeria which is being led by President Goodluck Jonathan. We are here to make sure that his priorities are met. CBN is dealing with monetary, currencies and exchange rates policies and the Finance sector is fiscal policy. The two have to come together in order to make a whole so there is no division", she said.

"But let me say this first the whole thrust of what the president wants for now is the creation of jobs so everything that we do in terms of pushing the economy forward has to be geared around how we can have a true job growth of the economy. So we are going to be working on that", she added.

According to her, "those micro economic structure reforms and investments in key sectors that need to be done in order that we create job for our youths would be the critical thrust but we can expand on that later".

On the issues of the debt, she said, "first we have to look at the fiscal issues in the country studying possibilities of fiscal consolidation and that includes looking at our debt level. As you know, I am somebody that believes we should have a prudent approach to our debt. But we will be able to tell you more later when we have started the process of looking at the budget".

Announces 3-point agenda

As she assumed duties yesterday at the Ministry of Finance secretariat, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, set for herself and the ministry staff, a three-point agenda of "efficiency, effectiveness and delivery."

Exuding confidence, she said the various challenges of the Nigerian economy could be successfully tackled with determination and readiness of spirited Nigerians to ensure the success of the needed reforms.

She urged all staff of the ministry to work hard, explaining that she could be a "very demanding" person.

The former World Bank Managing Director told the top management that the execution of government's policies would be based on hard work and that she was determined to ensure that Federal Ministry of Finance was at the lead in that regard. It is essential that all team members work together to deliver on the agenda", she said, adding that she did not have all the solutions alone.

She described her appointment into the cabinet as an honour that humbled her immensely and that "nobody is too big to serve his or her country. My decision to serve my country is because of my love for my country. I love Nigeria with a passion".

According to her, "Nigeria can do better than it is doing currently only if all those saddled with the responsibility of implementing the policies play together as a team".

In a brief remark, the Minister of State for Finance, Alhaji Yerima Lawan Ngama identified a successful execution of the Vision 20:2020 as critical to the realization of the Goodluck Jonathan administration's transformation agenda.

No pact to pay Okonjo-Iweala, others in US dollars-Jonathan

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has announced that contrary to reports, he has no pact with any of the cabinet members sourced from the diaspora, including the immediate past World Bank second highest officer, to earn wages in US dollar.

Said he: "The question the media ask and I know, for Ngozi, it was quite embarrassing when you accepted to serve; it was in the media that you gave conditions to be paid in dollars. Let me formally announce to Nigerians that she accepted to serve just like any other minister and indeed others who came from the diaspora have not asked us for dollar salary. They are going to receive salary and allowances like others in the cabinet. They are coming to serve the country and are not coming because of their personal aggrandizement.

"For today's ceremony, there is the need to make one or two statements. First let me welcome Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on board, a very familiar terrain. She was here before most of us here, as a minister of finance and minister of foreign affairs briefly before leaving".

He thanked the new minister for accepting to come and serve again, "because considering the position you were holding at the foremost world bank, it is difficult for you to come back to serve as minister in a country".

"And I am saying this with all pride because when your name was made known and it entered the media, anywhere I go, heads of state and governments were wondering why you would even agree to come; and they were appreciative of me, especially the African presidents that I did well to pull you back home to help solve the African problem because they know your worth in the world Bank.

"Let me also thank the World Bank, particularly Zoellick for allowing you to come, for co-operating with us and promising to support us. It is an opportunity for us to thank the world bank and also thank the president especially. People wonder why we want her back, we want her back not just to manage the Ministry of Finance but we are opportuned to have her as somebody who is quite vast in economic issues and we want her back to play a key role in the economic issues in the country.

"Of course, you also know that in the immediate past, she also introduced the idea of Economic Management Team during Obasanjo's time and we followed up- the late President Yar'Adua and myself." The President disclosed that NEMT is to be inaugurated this morning at Council Chambers of the State, even as he promised to expand the team as the need arises.

"This time around we are expanding the Economic Team because we believe the country is one. Yes, the states have their own economies but if there is no proper coordination in the management of the economy between the federal government and the states, we cannot go anywhere as a nation. And that is why the economic team, this time around, will have some governors as members."

But specifically, he said: "Ngozi is brought in to coordinate all economic activities of the federal government and of course by extension, help the state. Let me also thank other ministers brought in from the diaspora, we know it is quite challenging to move from developed countries to Nigeria".

"For you, the expectation, not just from Nigeria, but the whole world, is quite high. People expect so much from you, some people feel you have the magic wand to wave and change everything. I believe with your level of experience and with the support we will give you, and of course cooperation of your colleagues, all of you collectively will help to change our own country. You will help to work to make sure that our transformation agenda move smoothly and get to the destination expected.

"I am quite happy with the ministers on board because this time we are emphasizing the cluster arrangement even though the economic management team has not been formally inaugurated, I am aware that the core economic ministers have been meeting in the minister of petroleum resources office.

They have been holding meetings to see how the ministers can work together. So your job is easier because even before you take the oath of office, already people are doing the work and they are working together. So the spirit is already there for you people to work together; and I will give all the ministers the political support to what they are meant to do and I believe all of you will succeed".

kidnappers of John Mikel Obi's father demand £80,000

The kidnappers of John Obi Mikel’s father have demanded a “sizeable” ransom for his release, the Chelsea midfielder’s representatives confirmed in a statement on Thursday.

The Sport Entertainment and Media Group (SEM) however denied reports that the gang were seeking an £80,000( about N20million) pay-off for the release of Michael Obi, who was snatched in Nigeria last week.

“SEM advises that reports from Nigeria of an £80,000 ransom demand for the return of John Obi Mikel’s father is not true,” SEM said in a statement.

“We confirm that Michael Obi has been abducted and that the kidnappers have been in touch with the family and representatives of the family and that discussions for Michael’s safe release have begun.

“A sizeable demand has been made but, for security reasons, we are unable to release details of the amount.

“Mikel would like to thank his family, friends, Chelsea FC and his agents for their support and, at this time, it is Mikel’s intention to play for Chelsea this weekend, encouraged by his family to do so.”

Nigerian police said Wednesday they had recovered Obi’s car but the kidnapped man’s whereabouts remained unknown.

Michael Obi, who runs a transport company in Jos, has not been seen since Friday when he failed to return home from work.

The 24-year-old Nigeria midfielder pleaded Monday for his father’s kidnappers to free him, begging: “Please just let him go.”

Jos has seen waves of clashes between Christian and Muslim ethnic groups that have left hundreds dead in recent years, but kidnappings have not been known to occur there.

Scores of abductions have taken place in the oil-producing Niger Delta region in the country’s south by criminal gangs seeking ransom payments or militants claiming to be fighting for a fairer distribution of oil revenue.

Kidnappers make contact with John Mikel Obi's family

Abductors of Michael Obi, father of Super Eagles and Chelsea star John Mikel Obi, have made contact with the family.

Mr Obi, a retired civil servant, was abducted on Friday evening, and has not been seen since. But Tuesday, the family received two calls from the abductors, who first warned them that Obi senior had been taken out of Jos.

"They called mummy [Mikel's mother] and told her that we should not bother looking for Daddy in Jos because he has been taken to Lagos," a family source informed KickOffNigeria.com last night.

According to KickOffNigeria.com, a few hours later a second call came in, giving the family the location of the car which Obi was driving when he went missing.

Tony Obi, the eldest of the Obi children, confirmed that the car was found in Jos, but declined to say where.

"Yes, we have found the car," Tony Obi confirmed Tuesday night but insisted he was not going to say any other thing on the matter. "I can't say anything more for now."

Tony recovered the car in the company of two of his in-laws.

Earlier in the day, Nigeria police authority in Jos had urged residents with information on the disappearance of Obi to contact them as authorities struggled for clues in the kidnapping.

"We are seriously on the lookout for Mr. Michael Obi. We appeal to anyone with useful information on his whereabouts to contact the security agencies," Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Dipo Ayeni told AFP.

Meanwhile, Nigeria Football Federation's (NFF) Football Ambassador, Nwankwo Kanu has joined calls for the swift and unconditional release of the father of Super Eagles' star, Mikel.

Speaking with THISDAYSports yesterday, Kanu said it was very sad that such a thing could happen to a person, who is committed to bringing glory to his fatherland.

"Why will they do such a thing to him (Mikel)? This is a person trying his very best to bring joy to his fellow Nigerians through our number one sport, football only for this to happen to him. It is not fair at all," said Kanu, who recalled that a similar incidence happened to another national team player, Joseph Yobo some years ago.

"It is not a good trend footballers are only doing their jobs which is to make Nigerians happy so why will some people target them?"

Kanu, who said he called Mikel to console him immediately he heard the news, appealed to Nigerians to stop acts that paint the country in bad light.

"The news has been all over the airwaves here (UK) and on the internet, which is not good for the country. God knows what damage such reports are doing to the credibility of our country. How will potential visitors or businessmen feel reading such news about Nigeria? It will definitely frighten them off," he said.

I received death threats not to return - Okonjo-Iweala

Nigeria's new Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala says she has been threatened by 'vested interest', not to return to Nigeria, stressing however that she was not the type of person who is easily cowed by threats.

Speaking on the British Broadcasting Service, the new finance minister said " I do not know who they are, but I did recieve threats from people who think my role as finance minister who will also be overseeing the economy might touch their interests.

"We cannot yield the progress of this country to those who want to keep it in stranglehold, we have to move forward, the vast majority of Nigerians want to see changes in the economy like in emerging economies in the world". On the volatility of oil prices, she said the country would have to go back to measures adopted during her time as finance minister under former president Olusegun Obasanjo. "We had an instrument for checking oil price volatility" she said, adding that price volatility creates uncertainty and the oil price based fiscal rule, which she adopted in 2003 would be kept to, to check the impact of the volatility on the economy.

The new finance minister who will be sworn in today said the banking sector would not pose any threats to the economy as the central bank had demonstrated the capacity to deal with the challenges in the sector.

Her focus she informed, would be what the president wants as priority, and maintained that Nigeria had the capacity to manage her problems, but added she could embrace policies from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank considered good for Nigeria. She also said the crisis in the euro zone would lead to global uncertainty and affect aggregate demands.

President Goodluck Jonathan promises steady power before May 2015

President Goodluck Jonathan has restated his commitment to providing uninterrupted power supply in the country before the exit date of 2015 of his administration.

Jonathan spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tuesday when the Board of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) visited him.

The president, who restated the importance of a stable power to the development of the country said he was ready to ensure its reality.

"We all know the importance of power. We look forward to a time when Nigerians can enjoy uninterrupted power supply from the beginning to the end of a year and we are working hard to ensure that that objective is attained within the life-span of this administration," Jonathan said.

He charged members of the NDPHC led by its Chairman and Vice President Namadi Sambo, to be committed to the Board's vision as they have been saddled with the duty of ensuring steady power programme for the country through the National Integrated Power Projects works.Responding, Sambo said the NIPP was funded by the three-tiers of government to address the power needs of the country, stressing that "We will work relentlessly to fulfill our mandate on time."

He pledged that all the medium sized gas generating stations, the transmission lines and all other logistics needed to stabilise power supply were put to optimal service for Nigerians in line with the promise to provide stable power in the country.

Present at the meeting were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Governor Gabriel Suswam (Benue); Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta) and Dr. Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), while the Ministers of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, his Petroleum Reources counterpart, Mrs. Deziani Alison-Madueke and that of Justice, Mr. Bello Muhammed Adokie, were also in attendance.

Okonjo-Iweala departs World Bank, resumes as Finance Minister next week

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala departed the World Bank as managing directorFriday and said her biggest challenge as Nigeria's new economic chief will be to develop an economy that is less dependent on oil and gas.

Okonjo-Iweala, who will take up the role of Nigeria's Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance next week, has been a steady hand at the world's largest development institution since 2007, where she has had unique insights into the growing role of developing nations in the global economy.

Nigerian government needs to curb spending in order to put the country on a "better fiscal path. We need to tighten fiscal policy," Okonjo-Iweala said, adding that she is in favour of the central bank pegging the naira to provide stability for businesses. Monetary and fiscal policy must be supportive of each other, she added."Nigeria has to make some fundamental changes, it has to really diversify its economy," Okonjo-Iweala told Reuters in an interview on Thursday. "The time is now because investors are interested in the country," she said. She said the country's manufacturing sector had lost competitiveness due to increasing power shortages and bureaucratic hurdles, while its agriculture and services sectors had a lot more room to grow, and a flourishing entertainment industry held great potential. One lesson Okonjo-Iweala takes with her is that consistent policies and a stable political environment are essential for any economy to flourish.

"We have to show policy consistency in all kinds of ways. It builds trust in the economy, it builds a resilience and that helps enormously," Okonjo-Iweala said.

"There is a lack of political will by all actors worldwide to try to secure peace" in Somalia," Okonjo-Iweala said. "You cannot help farmers, and you cannot help pastoralists, unless there is peace," she added.

She said the situation in the Horn of Africa "should not color the success" Africa has had in recovering from the last financial crisis.

Chelsea star John Mikel Obi's father kidnapped

Fears are growing over the safety of the Chelsea midfielder Mikel John Obi's father after is was revealed that he is being held by kidnappers in his native Nigeria.

Michael Obi, who runs an inter-state transport company, has not been seen or heard from since he failed to return home from work last Friday in Jos, the capital of Plateau state. Calls to his mobile telephone apparently went unanswered before the device was unreachable from Saturday but, while no ransom demands have as yet been received, his management company have confirmed that he has been abducted.

Mikel was informed of his father's disappearance on Saturday morning and played in Chelsea's draw at Stoke City on Sunday, with his family back in Nigeria "hopeful" that Obi Sr will be found safe and well. "It's been tough for the young man," said the player's agent, John Ola Shittu. "The family in Jos reported [Obi Sr] missing at the police station, as expected, but we're taking all necessary measures to find him. We've told John to be brave and to stay calm.

"He is totally devastated. We were not sure whether to tell him before the game. But after speaking to the manager [André Villas-Boas], and [the Chelsea sporting director] Mike Emenalo, we agreed that he had a right to be informed of such a serious incident. He was under a lot of stress, but he showed a lot of character and mental strength to play against Stoke."

Kidnappings, more often of figures associated with the oil industry, are a common occurrence in Nigeria but high-profile footballers and their families have been targeted. In July 2008, the elder brother of the Everton defender Joseph Yobo, Nornu, was abducted in Port Harcourt. He was released some 12 days later though it is unclear whether a ransom was ever paid.

Chelsea released a statement on Monday which read: "Everyone at Chelsea Football Club was very concerned to hear that John Mikel Obi's father has been reported as missing and possibly abducted. We will give Mikel and his family our full support at this most difficult time."

A statement from Mikel's management company SEM said: "SEM confirms that client John Obi Mikel's father was abducted in Nigeria on Friday, 10 August. Thus far no ransom (demand) has been received. Mikel was informed by his manager prior to the Stoke v Chelsea match and decided to play so as not to let down his team and family."

Woman delivers headless baby

A middle-aged woman (names withheld) delivered  a headless baby at the General Hospital, Iyin-Ekiti, Ifelodun/Irepodun Local government Area, Ekiti State.

The baby was delivered around 2.15 p.m. at the weekend through caesarean operation.

Ekiti State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Wole Olugboji, who confirmed the strange occurrence to newsmen yesterday, said the headless baby died but the mother was alive.

According to him, 'There was a woman who gave birth to a baby without a head at General Hospital, Iyin. The baby is dead but the mother is okay.'

Olugboji said the mother of the baby, who was still unconscious due to the sedation before the caesarean section, did not see the baby, which was quickly disposed of in order to save the parents from the embarrassment that the strange baby might have caused them.

The father of the baby, a reliable source said, was present in when it was born and he approved of the quick burial of the baby. The hospital source said: 'The baby did not have a brain. His head was open at the back and you could see mucus inside the head instead of brain. It was strange, nobody in the hospital had seen such a baby before.

Another source added that the strange baby was very small at birth. He said the delivery was abnormal as the fluid that was drained out of the mother's body was in excess of normal quantity.

The woman was said to have gone for a series of scans in some private hospitals, where she was told that she was going to deliver a set of twins. It was gathered that officials of the General Hospital, Iyin, told the parents that the woman was carrying only one fetus and it was headless.

They believed that the baby must have been deformed due to the effects of some drugs or herbs.

'That is why we always ask pregnant women not to take any drugs unless they were prescribed by doctors. We can't also rule it out that the deformity might have been caused by concoctions. It is possible,' he said.

Speaking with The Moment on the occurrence, Dr. Philips Kanemo, of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City, Edo State, said it could be the result of congenital malformation or abnormality, which is a medical condition where a child is born without a brain.

According to him, 'It makes the entire head appear malformed or almost invisible, with a very small skull, and not that there is total absence of head.'

On the likely causes of such malformation, Kanemo said the condition could be idiopathic, that is, with 'no known cause.'

'It could be from toxic drugs taken by the mother at pregnancy or even alcohol. Many other substances can cause it.

'Because we are in Africa, some might attach it to witchcraft; but whatever is not scientifically proven is not a fact and has no basis,' he said.

Nigeria defeats England 1-0 in U20 FIFA World Cup

England exited the U20 World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Nigeria at the last-16 stage of the tournament in Colombia.

The result means Brian Eastick's side - deprived of 36 players from Premier League clubs - return home without having scored a single goal as the Young Lions' winless streak at the tournament was extended to 14 games.

An equally remarkable statistic is that England only conceded once over the past fortnight, Edafe Egbedi's close-range effort seven minutes into the second half at the Estadio Centenario proving decisive, reports Eurosport.

Despite Nigeria's favourites' tag - they headed into the game with a 100 per cent record and with a goal difference of plus-10 - England started the brighter.

But the African champions' quality came through in the second half, as Egbedi slotted home from Olarenwaju Kayode's cross and England's hopes of progressing were extinguished.

Nigeriawill now play France for a place in the semi-finals after Les Bleuets edged Ecuador 1-0, Antoine Griezmann getting the only goal of the game.

In other last-16 games, Brazil cruised past Saudi Arabia 3-0 to set up a mouth-watering quarter-final clash with Spain, who needed penalties to get past North Korea after 120 minutes of play failed to produce a goal.

Man Arrested for Beheading Housewife

A middle aged man (name withheld) has been arrested at Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State for the murder of a housewife, Mrs. Trust-ere College, who was beheaded, penultimate week, allegedly for ritual purposes.

The deceased was killed at her farm while she was fetching fire wood.

With the wounds on her face, it was learnt that she probably did not give in easily to her killer.

Luck, however, ran out of suspect, when he went to the Bomadi General Hospital, after allegedly committing the crime to treat the wounds he sustained in the struggle with the deceased, but was turned down by the officials, who suspected him because of the nature of the injury.

The bereaved husband was said to have raised alarm when he got to the farm and met the lifeless body of his wife, prompting the arrest of the suspect by a combined team of Joint Military Task Force, JTF.

A police source at the Bomadi Police Division, said it was a homicide case and that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Division, SCI D, Asaba for further investigations.

Nigeria vs Ghana Friendly Rescheduled for October

Nigeria and Ghana have agreed to reschedule Tuesday's cancelled friendly match. The game is now expected to be played on October 11, subject to approval from The FA.

Match agent Jairo Pachon said players and officials from both countries were hugely disappointed at the cancellation of the game, and were willing to give it another go as soon as possible

"We spoke to Nigeria and Ghana, and both countries have agreed that if the FA gives their approval, then the game can be played in October," Pachon said.

"Watford has already agreed that the game can still take place at Vicarage Road."

Tuesday's highly anticipated match up had to be called off on the advise of the Hertfordshire Constabulary, who informed Watford that they could not effectively police the game in the wake of three days of violent looting which started in London, and is rapidly spreading to other parts of England.

Super Eagles Paid Upfront for Cancelled Ghana Friendly due to London Riots

The organisers of the Ghana versus Nigeria match have paid the Super Eagles an unspecified sum in appearance fees upfront before the game billed for Vicarage Road, London, was put off on Tuesday as result of the rioting which hit several cities across England.

The much anticipated 55th derby match between Nigeria and Ghana was sensationally called off on the eve of the match when Hertfordshire Constabulary council declared a force majeure about its inability to secure the match in the wake of the sustained clash in London between the rioters and police.

But news out of Ghana Tuesday night claimed that the organisers of the match, JV2, had paid both Nigeria and Ghana ahead, before the kick off of the friendly, and had admitted suffering huge losses arising from the cancelation.

Though there were reported instances of the absence of key players as result of injuries and hitches with travelling arrangements, players and officials of both Nigeria and Ghana were already on ground before the cancelation.

The friendly match has now been rescheduled for a date in October subject to the approval of the FA of England. The rescheduled match will now hold after the African Cup of Nations qualifying matches involving both Ghana and Nigeria.

The Ghanaians will host Swaziland in Accra in the first week of September, while Nigeria will visit Madagascar in Antananarivo across the Indian Ocean the same week.

According to reports, JV2 chief executive, Justin Addo incurred the losses after he paid the mandatory appearance fees to both sides. He will also find a way of making refund to the fans who had paid for the tickets of the match billed for the ground of Watford football club.

Nigeria vs Ghana friendly cancelled due to London riots

Super Eagles Head Coach, Samson Siasia, has expressed his disappointment at the cancellation of Tuesday's international friendly match against Ghana Black Stars.

The friendly was due to be hosted at Watford FC's Vicarage Road stadium, but the club was forced to call off the game on the advise of the Hertforshire Constabulary.

Siasia and his players were left to contemplate the effects

"We are very disappointed that the game has been called off.

"We were looking forward to playing this game, and the players were also very prepared and confident despite the fact that we didn't have a full house and we had just one training session.

"I also spoke to the NFF officials and they are also disappointed that this game did not hold.

"But there is nothing anybody can do. The police have the final authority and if they say they cannot guarantee our security, then we have to take it like that."

Organisers are working hard to reschedule the game, with November being looked at as a possible date for the fixture.

However, Siasia is not losing any sleep over midfielder Dickson Etuhu's decision to make himself unavailable for selection.

Etuhu was handed a late call up to join the squad following withdrawals by several players, but declined, saying he did not wish to be considered for selection under Samson Siasia.

Asked about the decision at the pre-match press conference, Siasia did not seem overly concerned.

"We all know we had problems with visas for some players. And he is here in London so we asked him to come and be part of this team.

"He said no. I dont know what issues he has but that will be dealt with later."

Etuhu is said to be unhappy at having been ignored since Siasia took over, but his decision will cause little heartache for Siasia, who has a surfeit of midfielders higher up the pecking order than the Fulham man.

John Mikel Obi and Joel Obi have both locked down the central midfield roles, with Kalu Uche, Fengor Ogude and Nosa Igiebor all pushing hard to dislodge them.

Nollywood star, Sam Loco, passes away at 66

The cold hands of death Saturday visited the entertainment industry, when veteran actor, Mr. Samuel Loco Efeeimwonkiyeke, popularly known as Sam Loco Efe, died  on location in his hotel room in Owerri, Imo State.

He was said to have been enjoying his drinks at the bar of a popular hotel, located along Amakohia/Orlu Road, Owerri, at about 10pm on Saturday before he died.

However, a source at the hotel in Owerri told THISDAY on the condition of anonymity that the late actor was in good condition when he was last seen at about 10pm at the hotel bar drinking.

Similarly, a Nollywood actor (names withheld), told THISDAY that he led the late actor to his room No. 204 at about 11pm and left home thereafter. Late Saturday  night, the late actor called him to remind him of an appointment for 12noon the following day.

“But I was surprised when I was called by the hotel management to come over. On getting there, his room was locked and since there was no sign of anybody in the room they had to climb through the window and discovered the lifeless body of the late actor on the seat without shirts. His inhaler was by his side. We had to call the police on the scene,” he said.

When THISDAY visited the hotel, there was no sign of any ugly incident that happened there, even as the hotel workers were busy doing their work but discussing in low tones. They could not talk to THISDAY on the matter.

The hotel manager, Mr. Dan, who was spoken to on phone expressed surprise, saying “I’m not aware, because I am outside Owerri. I am going to call the hotel now to confirm.”

Confirming the death of the Nollywood actor, the Imo State Police command through the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Linus Nwaiwu said the information had gotten to their command.

“We have received information on the death of Sam Loco Efe from the hotel, our homicide unit is still working on the information,” he said.

Meanwhile, the corpse of the late actor has been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, (FMC) Owerri.
It would be recalled that Sam Loco Efe was one of Nollywoods most talented actors of contemporary Nigerian theatre and had for many years distinguished himself as a rare talent both in television and stage drama.

Nigeria Ranks 19th On Terrorism Risk Index

Nigeria occupies nineteenth position on the list of "extreme risk" countries and territories, according to the latest Terrorism Risk Index (TRI) released by Maplecroft.

Maplecroft, a United Kingdom-based risk analysis and mapping firm, has an international team of 75 multidisciplinary experts-including over 50 research analysts.

It provides services used extensively by leading global corporations across all sectors, governments, United Nations agencies and international non-governmental organisations.

t developed TRI to enable business to identify and monitor the risks posed by terrorism to employees and assets in 197 countries.

In the latest TRI released by the firm, 20 countries and territories were rated as "extreme risk," with Somalia, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan topping the list in that order. These top four countries also sustain over 75 per cent of world's fatalities from terrorism.

Other countries rated as extreme risk include the newly independent South Sudan (5), Yemen (6), Palestinian Occupied Territories (7), DR Congo (8), Central African Republic (9), Colombia (10), Algeria (11), Thailand (12), Philippines (13), Russia (14), Sudan (15), Iran (16), Burundi (17), India (18), Nigeria (19) and Israel (20).

Other categories of ranking include high risk, medium risk, low risk, and no data countries.

The UK-based risk advisory company stated on it's website that none of the major Western economies fall within the 'high' or 'extreme risk' bracket.

It rated as "medium risk", UK which was ranked 38 because of the deteriorating security conditions in Northern Ireland, while United States was ranked 61 and rated as "low risk."

The latest TRI also noted that there is a 15 per cent increase in terrorist attacks globally.

The risk advisory firm said the latest index was based on data available to calculate the frequency and lethality of terrorist incidents over the 12 month period prior to April 1, this year.

It also includes a historical component assessing the number of attacks over five years and the risks relating to countries' geographic proximity to terrorist hotspots.

On Nigeria, it said, "Security conditions in Nigeria remain fragile and a source of concern for investors."

It cited the activities of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), which it said had launched attacks beyond the Delta, in Abuja, the nation's capital city.

It is, however, important to note that the ranking of Nigeria was based on the data available on terrorist incidents over the 12 month period prior to April 1, this year.

Lately, there had been series of bomb attacks in the northeastern states of Borno and Bauchi, and North-central state of Niger by Boko Haram. Mid-June, the group struck in the heart of the nation's capital detonating a bomb at the car park of the Nigeria Police headquarters.

Bus runs over and kills 14 passengers during robbery

At least 14 passengers were killed on Tuesday along Zaraki-Kabaa Junction, Okene-Lokoja Road, when a truck ran over them where they were lying face down in obedience to the order of some armed bandits who had earlier forced them out of the luxury bus in which they were travelling to Abuja.

An eyewitness told The Moment that the bus owned by Chisco Transport Company with registration number XL 300 ABC, was travelling from Lagos to Abuja when it was forced to pull up by armed robbers at about 5 a.m. Tuesday.

It was learnt that the robbers who used a vehicle to block the side of the road flagged down the bus, and immediately ordered all the passengers to come out and lay flat on the road before they started robbing them of their belongings one after another.

The source further said that while the robbery operation was going on, another incoming luxury bus and a truck also heading for Abuja axis, without knowing what was happening, allegedly ran over them, killing virtually everybody that laid on the ground.

The Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kogi Command, Mr. Sunday Maku who confirmed the incident said his men got to the scene of the accident after receiving some distress calls. He said 14 persons who were already confirmed dead had been deposited at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) and the state Specialists Hospital (SH), Lokoja.

He further said that the incident took place at about 5 a.m. on Tuesday, noting that it was difficult to identify the bodies because they were mangled beyond recognition, adding that those whose relations travelled on the bus from Lagos to Abuja should check the FMC and SH Lokoja for possible identification of the victims.

Maku warned travellers to shun traveling in the night, stressing that the dangers it pose outweigh its advantages (if there is any at all).

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okansanmi, also confirmed the incident said only 13 people lost their lives in the incident.

The long drawn search by the anti-crime unit of the Kogi State Police Command paid off early hours of yesterday when the two dare devil armed robbers were shot dead by the police at Okene in Okene local government area of the state.

The police, in a show of bravery on their return to the state command from the operation, shot sporadically into the air. The development attracted a lot of people who trooped out en masse to catch a glimpse of the lifeless bodies of the gang leader, simply identified as Azeez, and one of his accomplices who have been terrorising the people of Okene local government and its environs for many months.

Last week, The Moment learnt that about four of the robbers were arrested and brought to the command for investigation, which led to yesterday's gun battle between the police and the robbers. The superior fire- power of the police eventually killed Azeez and his member gang while others escaped with various degrees of bullet wounds.

The Moment gathered that they held Azeez and his gang responsible for the killing of a Police Inspector in Okene early this year.

The development led the state Commissioner of Police Mr. John Abakasanga to have put his men on red alert for apprehension of the robbers. The intelligence gathering of the Okene Divisional Police Command paid off with information that led to arrest of four members of the gang.

Items recovered from the dead robbers include various designs of army uniforms, charms, machetes, AK 47 and other dangerous weapons.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command confirmed the incidents, and said the suspect will be paraded after conclusion of investigation.

Former Chief security officer Major Hamza Al-Mustapha claims video evidence of Abacha death

Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer, to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, who has been on trial for more than 12 years over alleged murder, yesterday, broke down in tears at a Lagos High Court, lamenting that he was kept behind bars because the authorities did not want him to reveal how late Gen. Sani Abacha and late Chief M.K.O. Abiola were murdered.

Al-Mustapha who is standing trial for the death of the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola opened his defence, yesterday.
Led in evidence by his counsel, Al-Mustapha, told the trial judge, Justice Mojisola Dada,  that he had both audio and video evidence of how the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha and the late Moshood M.K.O Abiola were allegedly murdered.

Al-Mustapha told the court that former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, was afraid he (Al-Mustapha) would make pubic, information at his disposal, hence he wanted him to spend the rest of his life in prison.
He said: “My incarceration was as a result of a script written and acted out by former Head of State, General Abubakar to further keep me in prison.

“First were the events that happened after the murder of General Abacha and late Chief MKO Abiola and for fear that I may divulge information that led to their death, they had to keep me in prison.”

He further told the court: “There is documentary evidence to show that shortly after the death of late Abiola, the then Head of State (allegedly) ordered that various sums of money be withdrawn from the Central Bank of Nigeria.”
He told the court that $200 million, £75 million and N500 million were allegedly withdrawn from the CBN to appease South West leaders and douse tension that arose after the death of Abiola.

He told the court that all visitations to the late Abiola were on tape, disclosing that some people after visiting Abiola would come back at night to the Presidential Villa to speak against him.
How I made Abdulsalami Head of State

“I am an officer who is being persecuted. After the death of Abacha so much happened within three days and the country was without a President or Vice President. The then Vice President, Lt Gen Diya, was imprisoned for staging a coup. Many senior officers wanted to become Head of State, but God gave me the wisdom and I assisted General Abdulsalami Abubakar to become President. But, this is the price I am paying for my loyalty and for assisting him.”

Al-Mustapha said he did not order Sergeant Barnabas Jabila Msheila (alias Sgt Rogers) to kill Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, saying: “On several occasions I assisted the Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, Mr. Kola Abiola, his personal physician, Dr. Ore Falomo and his lawyers to visit him (Abiola) in prison. Abiola would have been killed the very day Abacha died but I relocated him within the barracks and used the Strike Force to protect him from those who wanted to balance the equation.”

The matter was adjourned to tomorrow for continuation of the trial.
